Stabilization of monolayers at the organic-aqueous interface by citrate protected Au nanoparticles is shown to affect the interfacial dynamics and this effect is manifested in the oscillations of the interfacial potential. Variation in the size and concentration of the nanoparticles systematically affects the oscillations, attributed to particle-induced stabilization of monolayers. A structural model of the monolayer to account for the observed changes is proposed. © 2004 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Nanometer sized gold and silver clusters protected with 2- mercaptobenzothiazole monolayers have been prepared and characterized by various spectroscopic methods. Optical absorption spectra show features assigned to charge-transfer excitation between the monolayer and the cluster, in addition to a red shifting and reduction of plasmon absorption. The monolayers on clusters are compared with the corresponding 2D-monolayers investigated previously. The dominant adsorbate geometries on these clusters are different. Whereas the temperature dependent dynamics are minimal for 2D- SAMs, they are significant for monolayers on 3D surfaces, which is attributed to the decreased packing density on the cluster surfaces. The thermal stability of these monolayers is high and comparable to that of alkanethiolate monolayers. The monolayers undergo irreversible structural changes upon heating, which have been studied by differential scanning calorimetry and IR spectroscopy.

2-Mercaptobenzothiazole protected Au and Ag clusters

The oil/water interface has been of great importance in understanding the dynamics of oscillatory interfacial mass transfer phenomenon and other bio-oscillations in excitable membranes. The oscillatory mass transfer across the oil/water interface generates an oscillating interfacial potential, which is measurable with suitable experimental setup. A detailed and systematic experimental study on the CTAB/picric acid system is done and a diffusion model is studied using delay-differential equations. It is found that a two-variable model with delay in one of the variables is able to explain the observed phenomenon satisfactorily.
