In this letter, we devise a novel order statistics based technique to derive the exact expression for the throughput of pure ALOHA in a channel that supports Multi-Packet Reception (MPR). Our technique is general and can also be used in the analysis of other unslotted MAC protocols. Our analytical results are verified using simulations. © 2013 IEEE.

Order Statistics Based Analysis of Pure ALOHA in Channels with Multipacket Reception

Recent advances in physical layer technologies, allows simultaneous reception of multiple packets by a node. This promising technology is called Multi-Packet Reception (MPR). In this paper, we analyze a modified IEEE 802.11 DCF based medium access control (MAC) protocol for Wireless Local Area Network (WLAN) with nodes having MPR capability. Our protocol modifies the backoff mechanism of the IEEE 802.11 DCF so that the backoff process quickly adapts to the prevailing traffic conditions while leveraging MPR. A Markov chain model for the backoff process of the nodes with MPR capability has been derived. Further a Markov chain model to capture the state of the MPR channel has been derived. Solving the Markov chains for stationary probabilities, we derive the saturated throughput and energy efficiency of our protocol. Effect of the number of nodes, MPR capability, contention window size, and sensing errors on the saturation throughput has been investigated. Proposed analytical model has been validated through extensive simulations. Our investigation has the potential to aid in the development of next generation WLAN MAC protocol. © 2017 Elsevier Ltd

Design and performance analysis of a MAC protocol for wireless LANs supporting multipacket reception

We consider a Machine-To-Machine (M2M) network where a large number of user nodes (STAs) communicate with a Data Collector (DC). We consider the case where all the user nodes periodically transmit their data packets to the DC and the network is in saturation. Recently protocols based on Frame Slotted Aloha (FSA) have been shown to be suitable as MAC protocols for M2M data collection networks under saturated conditions. It can be shown that implementing Multi-Packet Reception (MPR) capability to the DC improves the performance of the FSA protocol. In this work we propose a Multi-Packet Reception (MPR) based FSA (MPR-FSA) protocol and study its performance. We derive the asymptotic limits of throughput, delay and energy efficiency based on MPR-FSA protocol. We also derive the limiting value of MPR (Klim) parameter for a given FSA based data collection network at which asymptotic performance is achieved. A mathematical model is proposed and the analytical values are validated using extensive simulations. © 2016 IEEE.

Efficiency analysis of M2M data collection networks using multipacket reception in frame-slotted ALOHA

Recent advances in physical layer communication techniques, enable receivers to decode multiple simultaneous transmissions. This technique is known as the multipacket reception (MPR). In this paper, we propose an enhancement to the IEEE 802.11ac EDCA protocol for channels supporting MPR for QoS provisioning. We show that in the case of MPR, in addition to CWmin, CWmax and AIFSN, we can use two more parameters namely (i)threshold and (ii)counter decrement value, that can offer service differentiation. The performance evaluation of the different metrics of the proposed protocol (throughput, delay, and jitter) is carried out using extensive simulations. © 2014 IEEE.
