Study of precursor prior to blow out in an shear layer stabilized flame

Abstract
High speed flame imaging along with schlieren visualization was used to study the flame loss from three burners: Jet lip stabilized flame, pin tip stabilized flame and flat tapered plate stabilized flame. In the case of jet lip stabilized and flat plate tapered stabilized flame, prior to the loss of stabilization, the flame was lifted off partially and reattached to the lip a few times before fully detaching from the lip. The rod stabilized flame on the other hand just lifted off in a continuous manner and never returned to the tip again. Temporary extinction-reignition events (precursors to blowout) were not observed in the single point stabilized burner, while the rim stabilized and tapered plate stabilized flame exhibited precursor events. It can be concluded that precursors occur only when there are multiple points of stabilization in the burner.
