Round robin testing of durability parameters - Towards identification of suitable durability tests for concrete

Abstract
This paper describes the results of a round-robin experimental investigation of durability parameters addressing gas, water and ionic penetrability for two different concrete mixes prepared using the materials available locally at Chennai. The objective of the study was to identify the extent of variability in different durability methods, with the purpose of selecting the best methods for durability design of concrete. The results indicate that durability tests show much higher levels of variability as opposed to compressive strength, which suggests that the use of acceptance criteria applied to compressive strength may not work for durability parameters. Additionally, the level of scatter is not similar in the different durability tests, so each test would need its own determination of the acceptance criteria, when these are used for the control of concrete durability in construction projects.
