Abstract
Besides the Integrated Gasification Combined Cycle, a number of other coal based combined cycle processes have shown considerable promise for higher efficiency and lower environmental damage. Pressurized bubbling fluidized bed combustion is one of them. Recently, pressurized spouted or bubbling fluidized bed partial gasifier along with pressurized circulating fluidized bed combustor is being considered for even higher efficiency. The pressurized circulating fluidized bed provides more favorable conditions for partial gasification/pyrolysis processes. The Technical University of Nova Scotia in collaboration with the Indian Institute of Technology is investigating into the pressurized circulating fluidized bed partial gasification combustion (PCFBG) process. To substantiate the promising results of higher efficiency and lower emission found through the conceptual design, a mini PCFBG plant has been built for operation at 12 bar and 1200 K. The plant is being used to generate data for more realistic conceptual designs and scale-up. The studies include investigations into hydrodynamics and heat transfer. It also includes a study into the effect of feed-stock and operating parameters on the gasification and combustion of coal in the pressurized CFB.
