Plates: Theories and Applications provides a comprehensive introduction to plate structures, covering classical theory and applications. It considers plate structures in several forms, starting from the simple uniform, thin, homogeneous metallic structure to more efficient and durable alternatives involving features such as variable-thickness, lamination, sandwich construction, fiber reinforcement, functional gradation, and moderately-thick to very-thick geometry. Different theoretical models are then discussed for analysis and design purposes starting from the classical thin plate theory to alternatives obtained by incorporation of appropriate complicating effects or by using fundamentally different assumptions. A three-dimensional elasticity solution is presented for unidirectionally reinforced composite plates with in-plane uniaxial grading using a series approach. Convergent results useful for future benchmarking studies are tabulated for two configurations. Displacement and stress variations are critically examined. Studies of thick and thin plates show that the benefit of grading depends significantly on the fiber orientation as well as the thickness ratio, and that this benefit cannot be correctly gauged using classical plate theory. Further, comparison of different configurations with the same total fiber content shows that a significant increase in stiffness may be achieved by a proper choice of fiber orientation and the degree of grading. © 2019

Three-dimensional analysis of composite FGM rectangular plates with in-plane heterogeneity

Dissimilar orthotropic stiffness coefficient variations are a characteristic feature of unidirectionally reinforced fiber composites with a variable fiber volume fraction, but have not been commonly considered in the literature. The objective of this work is to account for them and obtain a three-dimensional elasticity solution with specific reference to simply supported rectangular plates. The analysis involves the solution of variable coefficient governing equations using the power series approach. For a graphite–epoxy plate with a sandwich-like configuration, results useful as a benchmark for future comparisons are tabulated for a specific power law variation of the volume fraction. It is shown that the thickness-wise variations of displacements and stresses are significantly nonlinear, and such variations are not captured correctly by the classical plate theory. Further, on the basis of the elasticity solution, the relative benefit of using a sandwich-like configuration versus a homogeneous plate is shown to depend on the span-to-thickness ratio and to decrease significantly as the plate becomes thick. © 2018, Springer-Verlag GmbH Austria, part of Springer Nature.

Elasticity solution for orthotropic FGM plates with dissimilar stiffness coefficient variations

Use of heavy gases in centrifugal compressors for enhanced oil extraction have made the impellers susceptible to failures through acousto-elastic instabilities. This study focusses on understanding the dynamical behavior of such systems by considering the effects of the bounded fluid housed in a casing on a rotating disc. First, a mathematical model is developed that incorporates the interaction between the rotating impeller - modelled as a flexible disc - and the bounded compressible fluid medium in which it is immersed. The nonlinear effects arising due to large deformations of the disc have been included in the formulation so as to capture the post flutter behavior. A bifurcation analysis is carried out with the disc rotational speed as the bifurcation parameter to investigate the dynamical behavior of the coupled system and estimate the stability boundaries. Parametric studies reveal that the relative strengths of the various dissipation mechanisms in the coupled system play a significant role that affect the bifurcation route and the post flutter behavior in the acousto-elastic system. © 2016 Elsevier Ltd
