Abstract
Tests were run on several common propellant ingredients in an optical hot stage microscope equipped with a video camera. The tests revealed the physical behavior of samples. A tabulation of melting, bubbling and gassification temperatures is presented. The melting and decomposition temperatures of ingredients differ so much that their combination in propellants would be expected to produce a largely unexplored diversity of burning behavior. A more detailed description is given of the sometimes complex response of cured PBAN and HTPB binders, including the effects of kind and amount of curing agent; plasticizer (DOA) content, effect of Fe2O3 and TiO2 additives; and effect of experimental variables. Expected differences among PBAN, IPDI cured HTPB and DDI cured HTPB were not evident. © 2000 by Edward W. Price.
