A comprehensive study of the influence of plate geometry and the added packing on the holdup and slip velocity in reciprocating plate columns is presented. The use of packing in the interplate spaces of the column is of interest as packing alters the character of dispersion and also provides contact area for the phases. A model is proposed relating slip velocity to the single drop rise velocity taking into consideration the pseudohydrostatic effects and particle-to-particle interaction effects.

Dispersed phase holdup was measured in a pulsed plate column for the kerosene‐water system under binary conditions and under solute transfer from dispersed to continuous and continuous to dispersed phases. The experimental data were satisfactorily modelled through a recirculation regime model. The drop size distribution, measured by a photographic technique, exhibited a multinodal character at low agitation rates and high dispersed phase flow rate. Sauter mean drop diameter was found to depend on the agitation rate, the dispersed phase flow rate, the mass transfer direction and the plate free area. Dispersed phase holdup and drop size distribution in pulsed plate columns

The residence time distribution (RTD) of the phase under continuous flow and dispersed flow was measured in a plate-pulsed column under countercurrent liquid-liquid flow, and modelled using (i) the axial dispersion model and (ii) the noninteger ideal stage cascade model. The axial mixing in the continuous phase was found to be significantly higher than in the dispersed phase. The model parameters were related to the operating conditions and system variables. © 1987 Springer-Verlag.
