Two‐phase pressure drop and dynamic and total liquid saturation are experimentally determined for air‐water system under cocurrent downflow through packed beds using packing differing widely in geometry. The experimental data of the present study as well as that available in literature is satisfactorily correlated in terms of: (a) Lockhart‐Martinelli parameters; and (b) the Reynolds numbers defined for the respective phases and the bed porosity, taking into account the flow behavior of the phases through the packed bed. The total and dynamic liquid saturation under concurrent gas-liquid downflow through packed beds were experimentally measured for non-foaming, foaming Newtonian and non-Newtonian liquids. The variables include the column diameter, packing size and shape, flow rate of the phases, and physical properties. Correlations were presented in terms of Lockhart-Martinelli parameter, χ for non-foaming Newtonian and non-Newtonian liquids and in terms of modified Lockhart-Martinelli parameter, χ' for foaming Newtonian liquids.

Interfacial area in cocurrent gas-liquid downflow through packed beds is correlated taking into consideration the physical properties of the fluids and the power dissipation in the system. A correlation for interfacial area in co-current gas-liquid downflow through packed beds

A model for pressure drop is proposed for gas-liquid flow through packed beds on the basis of the observed absence of radial pressure gradients and taking into consideration the structure of the bed and the physical properties of the fluids. The model divides the total voitage of the bed into internal and external voidage and appropriately distributes the total liquid holdup into internal and external holdup. Over 2500 experimental data, from the present study as well as those reported in literature, are correlated by the model with an r.m.s. deviation of less than ±9%. The significant parameters affecting the two-phase pressure drop are found to be the bed porosity, the Reynolds number, and the product of the Eötvos and the Morton numbers. © 1993.

A model for the pressure drop in gas-liquid cocurrent downflow through packed beds

The average in situ volume fraction of the liquid phase for gas‐liquid cocurrent downflow through packed beds is correlated to the input volume fraction of the liquid and the bed geometry. The range of operation is delineated into a high‐interaction regime and a low‐interaction regime based on the influence of the gas rate on the liquid holdup. Experimental data of the present investigation using air‐water and air‐CMC solutions, as well as that reported in literature covering a wide range in variables, are considered in the development of correlations for total and dynamic liquid holdup.
