Abstract
The geotechnical group in the Civil Engineering Department at the Royal Military College of Canada (RMC) has been carrying out a large-scale laboratory testing program for several years which includes the construction and testing to failure of carefully monitored 3m high models of geogrid reinforced soil walls. Concurrent with the experimental work, a general purpose finite element program (GEOFEM) has been developed to model various aspects of geosynthetic reinforced soil wall systems and to carry out parametric studies. The program has been calibrated using the data from the carefully instrumented RMC tests. The paper reviews experimental results from an incrementally constructed wall test carried out in the RMC Test Facility and gives details of the finite element simulation method that was employed to model important features of the test.
