Abstract
Fluid jet polishing is a non-traditional polishing process used to polish complex optical components with nano level surface finish. In fluid jet polishing process low pressure pre-mixed abrasive slurry jet is used to polish the optical components. The surface roughness of polished surface will depend upon the process parameters of fluid jet polishing process. In this work, the role of fluid jet polishing process parameters on surface roughness of BK-7 optical glass are studied at low pressure (1.3bar) pre-mixed abrasive slurry jet condition. The process parameters considered in this work are impact angle, stand-off distance, concentration of abrasives, and number of passes, nozzle speed and workpiece speed. The experiments were conducted in order to understand the role of various parameters on surface roughness of the workpiece after polishing. In the first case, the role of impact angle and stand-off distance at fixed nozzle speed, workpiece speed and concentration of the abrasive particle are studied. In the second case, the role of concentration of abrasive particle and number of passes at fixed impact angle, stand-off distance, nozzle speed and workpiece speed are studied. In the third case, the role of nozzle speed and workpiece speed at fixed impact angle, stand-off distance, and concentration of the abrasive particles are studied. From the different set of experiments, the optimum process parameters were obtained. © ISAAT 2017.All right reserved.
