Abstract
In the driving of piles into the ground, vibration is generated and causes disturbances to adjacent structures in addition to disruption of sensitive equipment. Studying how they affect structures, as well as the severity of the problem, is therefore important. As such, a scaled-down model test was commenced in the open field to study the effect of open trenches on mitigation of ground vibrations. The test involved 48-mm concrete piles and 45-mm steel piles driven into the ground. The ground vibration generated by piling is of short-duration pulse of impulsive character.
