Suspended sediments deposition at estuary affects marine life in coastal ecosystem. Particle size distribution (PSD) is used to find settling velocity of suspended sediments. In this study, a new image capturing system for size analysis (ICS4S) method using digital camera-based image capturing technique for determining PSD is proposed and validated. Image of suspended sediments is acquired using a low-cost setup developed, and ImageJ software is used for image processing. The PSD results obtained using ICS4S method is well correlated with hydrometer test and the Shen method. The proposed ICS4S method is easy to understand and implement both in laboratory and field. © 2017, © 2017 Taylor & Francis.

Determination of suspended sediments particle size distribution using image capturing method

Health of coastal ecosystems depends on the quantity and quality of suspended sediments brought by the rivers from land to the estuary. Behaviour of suspended sediments depends on water and sediment characteristics. Water temperature affects suspended sediment behaviour but has not been fully understood. Increase in water temperature due to global warming creates ecological issues. In the present study, influence of water temperature rise on suspended sediment concentration (SSC) has been studied under controlled laboratory conditions. Experiments were conducted in an annular flume using kaolin (d50 = 6.9 μm) at different water temperatures (T = 30o, 40o, and 50 °C) and salinities (S = 0, 1, 2, 5, and 10 g/L). Results show that both SSC and particle size increased with an increase in water temperature, but both decreased with an increase in water salinity. For S ≥ 2 g/L, the influence of water temperature on both SSC and settling velocity of suspended sediments was more significant compared to S &lt; 2 g/L. For a unit increase in water temperature (°C), the SSC increased by 0.18%, 0.30%, 0.73%, 0.89%, 2.05% and settling velocity decreased by 1.71%, 2.15%, 3.64%, 3.17%, 3.45%, for water salinities of 0, 1, 2, 5 and 10 g/L, respectively. Empirical equations for determining the SSC at any time t and at any length L along the flow direction have been developed and verified. © 2019, Springer Nature Switzerland AG.

Experimental Investigation of Water Temperature Influence on Suspended Sediment Concentration

Microbes present in both fresh and saline water associate with suspended sediments by secrete extracellular polymeric substance to survive under stressful environmental conditions. Deposition of these bio-contaminated sediments affects the bed ecosystem. When re-suspended, they further affect water quality and health of both human as well as aquatic life. In this study, laboratory experiments are conducted in an annular flume to understand the interaction between suspended sediments attached with microbes (biosediment) and without microbes (non-biosediment) at different mix ratios (Mr = 0:1, 0.25:0.75, 0.50:0.50, and 1:0) and water salinity (S = 0, 1, 2, 5, 10, and 35 g/L). Results show that, rate of deposition increases with an increase in biosediment concentration for any water salinity and mix ratio. In saline water, presence of microbes on suspended sediments induces more deposition until water salinity of 5 g/L and thereafter deposition reduces. Presence of 25% and 50% of biosediment in water increases deposition up to a critical salinity of 1.72 g/L and 2.60 g/L, respectively. Suspended sediment particle size increases with an increase in biosediment concentration and decreases with an increase in water salinity. Fractal dimension results show that, when salinity increases, fragile non-biosediment and dense biosediments are retained in suspension. This study shows that presence of live microbes on suspended sediments affects their depositional behaviour. © 2018 Elsevier B.V.
