Abstract
Being the world's third largest construction market, China holds potential opportunities both for domestic and for International contractors. Forecasted construction expenditures in China are expected to grow at a rate of 11.6 per cent per year through to 2011. Although China is a single nation, it consists of distinctively different markets characterized by diverse market conditions and economies. This means that construction companies need a huge amount of information when venturing into these markets to capture a share of the booming industry. The ability of the construction companies to effectively create, capture, coordinate and combine knowledge is thus important Knowledge management information system (KMIS), increasingly being recognized as a core business concern and intellectual asset, has a vital role to play in helping companies gain a competitive advantage. Being the hidden asset of companies, knowledge needs to be presented more upfront to be useful to the companies. For this purpose, this paper proposes to develop an iterative computer system using cartograms to gain information relating to the which, where, why and when of the construction industry. A cartogram is a representation of a map which shows qualitative information, thereby rendering spatial comparison between countries/regions possible. The use of computer based cartography can therefore effectively yield a clearer representation of geographical attributes in the Chinese construction market Following the development of the cartogram, further studies can be taken to analyze the correlations which the construction industry may have with other economic variables such as GDP and population, and other economic sectors such as manufacturing and agriculture. The ability to provide a visualization process and communicative channel forms the crux of the cartogram. These two functions can help in stimulating the user's thinking and aid them in decision making. Apart from these two notable functions, the cartogram is able to provide a graphical user interface whereby the spatial information will be stored. All these can aid the companies in finding potential customer base or in analyzing China's construction market. A proto-type computer-based cartogram for the Chinese construction market will be presented in the paper. © 2008 Proceedings of CRIOCM 2008 International Research Symposium on Advancement of Construction Management and Real Estate.
