Application of scaled particle theory to ethyl acetate – ethanol – salt system

Abstract
To obtain the salting coefficient of salts in polar system (ethyl acetate – ethanol), the scaled particle theory has been used. The scaled particle theory is a purely predictive method for evaluation of the salt effect on isobaric vapor- liquid equilibrium of ethyl acetate- ethanol at 1 atm. It requires only molecular parameters for calculating the salting effect. From scaled particle theory, the salt effect of polar molecule have examined in non aqueous salt solutions. The salting constant k of polar molecule is predicted for univalent salts. The experimental data is satisfactory with the calculated values of scaled particle theory. In the present study, it is recognized that the anion solvation of the non-aqueous salt solution is important in determining salting out coefficients. It is found that salting out phenomenon is mainly due to anion. It is also observed that salting coefficient is depending on the size of the anion. Therefore, the salting coefficient for a ternary system of ethyl acetate- ethanol and salts are well determined by scaled particle theory. © 2011 AIChE. All rights reserved.
