A comparative study between finite element and polygonal finite element approaches for electromechanical coupled linear problems

Abstract
Piezoelectric ceramics exhibit significant coupled electromechanical phenomenon that has been widely employed in sensor and actuator applications. Macroscopic behavior of piezoelectric ceramics depends on the heterogeneities that presents in the micro structural distribution. A polycrystalline piezoceramic consists of many grains with each one being distinct from the neighboring grains by their crystallographic orientations. In regular finite element models dealing with electromechanical plane problems, each representative grain needs to be sub discretized by many triangular or quadrilateral finite elements for required accuracy. Such sub-discretization can be avoided in polygonal finite element method, where each grain is approximated by a single irregular polygonal finite element thus, realistically capturing the microstructure of the ceramics. In this work, a comparative study is made between the displacement based finite element method (FEM) and the stress based polygonal finite element method (PolyFEM) for electromechanical plane problems and the outcome is discussed.
