Effects of flow depth, ions, and salinity on the evolution of suspended sediment concentration (SSC) are presented. Experiments are conducted in an annular flume using three different sediments (Rhine mud, alumina, and silica) in ionic and saline water. Observations show that at a constant bed shear stress (τ) in ionic water, the SSC of all sediments decreases because of an increase in the flow depth. At a constant the SSC increased with an increase in τ When H and τ remained constant, alumina and silica particles quickly flocculated and attained a lower equilibrium concentration (C eq)in ionic water than in saline water. Similarly, the flocculation process of Rhine mud is faster in ionic water, but the C eq in ionic water is higher than that of saline water. For all the sediments tested, the time to reach C eq is greater in saline water than in ionic water. In saline water, the evolution of SSC of Rhine mud is in between that of alumina and silica. © 2012 American Society of Civil Engineers.

The numerical simulation of an integrated, liquid-fuelled ramjet engine comprising supersonicair intake, subsonic combustor and a convergent-divergent nozzle has been carried out and theresults are discussed in this paper. These results include cold flow studies, heat addition in thecombustor and full engine analysis with coupled simulation of supersonic air-intake andcombustion chamber along with the nozzle. Overall ramjet operation depends on the performanceof the air intake and the combustion chamber.&nbsp; The coupling phenomena are very dominant andperformance of air intake is affected vastly by the combustor operation and vice versa. In thispaper, a numerical analysis of integrated liquid ramjet engine considering coupling phenomenabetween various sub-systems viz., air intake, combustor and nozzle has been reported.

Numerical Analysis of Integrated Liquid Ramjet Engine

Compliant offshore TLPs are essentially meant for deep oil/gas exploration and are usually constructed on the seashore and then towed down to the particular location for anchorage. They are connected to the sea bed by means of pretension cables. The increased use of TLPs in deep waters and necessity of reduction of usually high value of pretension make the effect of variable tension in the tether dynamics more significant. This work presents the dynamic analysis of tethers and TLPs considering the linearly varying tension along the tether length. The modal analysis considers a linear cable equation for tether modeling subjected to tension which varies along its length. A Mathieu stability analysis is then performed for TLPs of different shapes and different water depth vis-à-vis of 527.8, 872, and 1200&nbsp;m respectively to obtain the amplitudes of tether vibrations. The unstable modes of vibration are also verified. The resultant modal forms for the tether's dynamic model are then obtained in form of Bessel's function. From the numerical studies conducted it is seen that increased tether tension not only leads to a stable platform but also improves the stability due to increased hydrodynamic loading contributing to added mass. From the studies conducted it is also seen that the triangular configuration TLPs with increased initial pretension are more stable compared to four leg TLP in the first mode of vibration.

Stability analysis of TLP tethers

The role of secretory proteins of Mycobacterium tuberculosis in pathogenesis and stimulation of specific host responses is well documented. They are also shown to activate different cell types, which subsequently present mycobacterial antigens to T cells. Therefore identification of T cell epitopes from this set of proteins may serve to define candidate antigens with vaccine potential. Fifty-two secretory proteins of M. tuberculosis H37Rv were analyzed computationally for the presence of HLA class I binding nonameric peptides. All possible overlapping nonameric peptide sequences from 52 secretory proteins were generated in silico and analyzed for their ability to bind to 33 alleles belonging to A, B and C loci of HLA class I. Fifteen percent of generated peptides are predicted to bind to HLA with halftime of dissociation T1/2 ≥100 min and 73% of the peptides predicted to bind are mono-allelic in their binding. The structural basis for recognition of nonamers by different HLA molecules was studied employing structural modeling of HLA class I-peptide complexes and there exists a good correlation between structural analysis and binding prediction. Pathogen peptides that could behave as self- or partially self-peptides in the host were eliminated using a comparative study with the human proteome, thus reducing the number of peptides for analysis. The implications of the finding for vaccine development are discussed vis-à-vis the limitations of the use of subunit vaccine and DNA vaccine. © 2005 Elsevier SAS. All rights reserved.
