A class of boundary value problems involving propagation of two-dimensional surface water waves, associated with deep water and a plane vertical rigid barrier is investigated under the assumption that the surface is covered by a thin sheet of ice. Assuming that the ice-cover behaves like a thin isotropic elastic plate, the problems under consideration lead to those of solving the two-dimensional Laplace equation in a quarter-plane, under a Neumann boundary condition on the vertical boundary and a condition involving up to fifth order derivatives of the unknown function on the horizontal ice-covered boundary, along with two appropriate edge conditions, ensuring the uniqueness of the solutions. Two different methods are employed to solve the mixed boundary value problems completely, by determining the unique solution of a special type of integral equation of the first kind in the first method and by exploiting the analyticity property of the Fourier cosine transform in the second method. © 2003 Elsevier Science Ltd. Surface water waves involving a vertical barrier in the presence of an ice-cover

The induction smelting procedure is a direct smelting process in which self-fluxed composite pellets are melted in a single phase induction furnace in combination with top blown oxygen/air. A mathematical model has been created for an induction smelting process having three distinct regions: (i) the electromagnetically stirred or liquid region, (ii) the liquid-solid interaction (bed) region, and (iii) the gas jet and solid interaction region. Non-steady state energy and species balances with steady state momentum transfer must be considered for each region. The electromagnetic body force was computed numerically for the liquid region. A cell model was incorporated to describe the heat, mass, and momentum balance in the bed region. All regions were correlated by an overall heat and mass balance for the whole smelting process. An outline of the computational approach was also provided.

Induction smelting process part 1 mathematical formulation

Computed results for the induction smelting process are presented which give considerable insight into the direct smelting process. Results have been presented to describe the temperature, velocity, and iron oxide concentration in the liquid and bed regions. The procedure for measuring various experimental parameters in an induction smelting process has been described. Model results have been compared with experimentally measured results for the temperature, iron oxide concentration, and melt height. Computed and experimental results exhibit reasonable agreement which demonstrates the validity of the model in describing a smelting process completely. The success of the cell model approach here indicates its possible use in other materials processing operations.

Induction smelting process part 2 model verification with experiment

A mathematical model has been developed for the flow and mass-transfer processes associated with the nonspherical, deformed bubbles in a copper converter. The case of an isolated reacting bubble has been studied numerically by solving the pertinent transport equations with Galerkin finite element modeling (FEM) technique. The continuous change in bubble shape and size has been handled through an adaptive grid generation technique based upon a transfinite inter-polation scheme. Some of the results have shown a significant difference from the earlier analysis of spherical bubbles. The numerical predictions are well in accord with the existing theory and measurements. © 1993 The Minerals, Metals & Material Society.

A finite element modeling analysis of flow and mass transfer through nonspherical bubbles in a copper converter

Induction smelting process, ISP, is a direct smelting process in which self-fluxed composite pellets (made of iron ore, brown coal and lime) are melted in a single phase induction furnace in conjunction with top blown oxygen. A mass transfer model to predict the concentration of iron oxide, has been developed for this process. Transient mass balance equation with complex boundary conditions has been worked out by adopting a relatively new approach known as the cell model approach. These equations have been solved numerically using finite difference technique to obtain the iron oxide concentration profile in the induction smelting process. Numerical and experimental results obtained for the iron oxide concentration show a reasonable agreement with each other.

Prediction of an iron oxide concentration in the induction smelting process

A three-dimensional steady state model has been worked out for the multihearth roasters, considering the dead roasting reaction of chalcopyrite ore as a typical roasting reaction. Numerical solution of the stiff non-linear partial differential equations developed in the model has been obtained through a line-by-line approach, incorporating an implicit finite difference discretization scheme implemented in PASCAL language. The results augment an earlier calculation on this roaster based upon a two-dimensional model and a better insight of the steady state roasting behavior is possible through this three-dimensional calculation.

Development of a 3-D heat and mass transfer model for multihearth roasters

A mathematical model has been proposed for bubble behavior in a copper converter. Numerical calculations have been performed for isolating spherical bubble under axi-symmetric potential flow situation. The flow is taken as steady while a coupled solution of energy equation and the equation for convective diffusion has been obtained for the non-steady heat and mass transfer processes. The role of various process parameters is examined in detail and the results are presented for both the slag-making and copper-making stages of a conventional copper converter.

Development of a mathematical model for bubbles in a copper converter

A simultaneous heat and mass transfer model has been developed for the multiheart roasters, considering dead roasting of chalcopyrite as a typical roasting reaction. Various mass and energy balances have been worked out during the development of this model yielding coupled nonlinear partial differential equations with highly complex boundary conditions. These equations have been solved numerically using a line-by-line finite difference approach to obtain profiles of gas temperature, solid temperature, oxygen concentration, and solid fraction reacted in the roaster. The trend of the computed results appears to be realistic and can be easily explained from simple physical considerations. The effects of gas preheating and the heat transfer coefficient between the solid and the gas upon the roasting process are examined. The results show that gas preheating is beneficial for the roasting process, and the process parameters, such as particle size, gas flow rate, etc., must be adjusted so as to give the desirable value of the heat transfer coefficient needed for proper roasting. © 1989 The Minerals, Metals & Materials Society and ASM International.

Development of a mathematical model for multihearth roasters

We present a novel approach to mine word similarity in Textual Case Based Reasoning. We exploit indirect associations of words, in addition to direct ones for estimating their similarity. If word A co-occurs with word B, we say A and B share a first order association between them. If A co-occurs with B in some documents, and B with C in some others, then A and C are said to share a second order co-occurrence via B. Higher orders of co-occurrence may similarly be defined. In this paper we present algorithms for mining higher order co-occurrences. A weighted linear model is used to combine the contribution of these higher orders into a word similarity model. Our experimental results demonstrate significant improvements compared to similarity models based on first order co-occurrences alone. Our approach also outperforms state-of-the-art techniques like SVM and LSI in classification tasks of varying complexity.
