The automated detection of electrographic seizures in the neonatal EEG is a difficult, unsolved problem because of the variety of seizure patterns and the large number of seizure-like artifacts and non-seizure rhythmic EEG events. In this paper we present an architecture and methodology for such a detection system designed around a combination of signal processing, pattern recognition, heuristic rules, and neural networks. We believe that this hybrid approach offers the best chance for reliable automated detection of neonatal seizures.

Methodology and system architecture for automated detection of epileptic seizures in the Neonatal EEG

The objective of the study is to experimentally investigate the mixing of transversely injected stream of a carrier gas carrying iodine with an oxygen cross-flow in a subsonic Chemical oxygen iodine Laser (COIL). The investigation was performed non-intrusively, using iodine planar laser induced fluorescence (PLIF). A frequency doubled Nd:YAG laser was used as the light source, and the images were acquired using a CCD camera. Injectant mole fraction data was reduced from these images using digital image processing. Experiments were performed for different cross-flow and injected flow rates. A parameter called degree of unmixedness, which was defined as the ratio between the standard deviation of the image intensities and the average intensity, was used to quantify the mixing. A mixing distance was defined as the location downstream of which the degree of unmixedness did not change by 10%. It is seen from the images that for the same injected flow rates, the mixing distance is higher for higher crossflow rates. It is also observed that for a given crossflow rate, higher injected flow rates lead to lower mixing distances. The mixing distances obtained were correlated using the ratio between the momentum flow rates of the injected jets and the cross-flow. The mixing distances were found to decrease with increasing momentum ratios.

Mixing of oxygen and iodine in a subsonic coil

Since the last five decades, polymer-derived ceramics (PDCs) are in use and envisaged for a variety of applications. The transition of a precursor to an inorganic ceramic by pyrolysis and heat-treatment results in either amorphous or nanocrystalline composites with the evolution of phases strongly controlled by the processing conditions. Understanding the deformation behaviour under ambient conditions and at elevated temperatures is key to designing these materials for long-term use. However, quantitative reliable estimation of mechanical properties is quite challenging due to its unique structure which in turn is strongly governed by the precursor chemistry. The mechanical behaviour of PDCs in the form of fibres, bulk and foams are different and they are discussed separately. Both experimental and simulation-based studies are considered in this review. Recently, additive manufacturing processes have been used for the fabrication of PDCs, the mechanical properties of which are also included in this review.
