Prof. Indrapal Singh’s specialization is in the area of organic synthesis with special interest in synthetic carbohydrate chemistry. He obtained a bachelor’s degree in chemistry from Nowrosjee Wadia College, University of Pune. He obtained his master’s and Ph. D degree in Chemistry from the Department of Chemistry, University of Pune, with doctoral studies under the supervision of Professor N S Narasimhan. For a period of two years between the master’s and PhD degree he worked as a synthetic organic chemist with Hoechst Research Centre, Mumbai (then Bombay). Following his PhD work and a brief stint at National Chemical Laboratory, Pune as Fellow Scientist, he went for his first post-doctoral studies at University of California, Santa Cruz, USA in the field of radical mediated reactions. He later moved to the University of Konstanz, Germany as an Alexander von Humboldt fellow, to carry out research work in Professor Richard R. Schmidt’s group in the exciting and challenging field of Synthetic Carbohydrate Chemistry. He joined the Department of Chemistry, IIT Madras as an Assistant Professor in 1995, and rose to the rank of full Professor in 2006. He later served the Department as Head, during the period 2015-2018.
