This paper presents an ultimate strength analysis for such a combined shell foundation, based on an extension of the yield line theory and using the work method on a mechanism of failure identified from tests. The theoretical results have been verified by means of tests, which were conducted on wire-reinforced microconcrete models of these foundations under vertical loads and moments. The studies have established the sound behavior, apart from the enormous scope for economy possible with shell foundations of this type.
