Abstract
The 1993 Killari earthquake was one of the most devastating earthquakes to occur in recent times. This earthquake occurred in an area that was considered non-seismic, and left over nine thousand people dead. The affected area is primarily rural with stone masonry constructions in mud mortar, which sustained widespread damages and were the primary cause for the large percentage of persons dead in quite a few villages. The relief, rehabilitation and recovery efforts following the earthquake were excellent. The principal causes of damage to the various constructions in the region are discussed in this paper and improvements are suggested. The execution and comprehensiveness of the engineering approach adopted for the large scale rehabilitation and recovery is unique, commendable and unprecedented in the country.
