A detailed study has been conducted on the effect of different types of thickness profile on the response of a beam. In order to be able to make a general comment, the study has been extended to include two higher modes. In addition, three boundary conditions, namely, clamped at both ends, simply supported at both ends, and one end clamped and the other free, have been studied for uniformly distributed sinusoidal load and point sinusoidal load. The results obtained for different thickness profiles are compared with those obtained for parallel beam. © 1992.

Cantilever beams with discontinuity in the thickness and subjected to harmonic point load have been analyzed. A beam element with 2 DOF (degrees of freedom) per node is used for the analysis. Three beam models are analyzed for possible reduction of maximum displacement and maximum stress by choosing the discontinuity at different locations. Numerical results are presented for various step-ratios in the thickness for the first three modes. The weight of the beam is kept constant for various step-ratios. It has been shown that the maximum displacement and maximum stress decreases for a certain type of thickness variations presented in this paper. © 1994.

Three beam models are analysed for possible reduction of maximum displacement and maximum stress by choosing the discontinuity at different locations. Numerical results are presented for various step-ratios in the thickness. The weight of the beam is kept constant for various step-ratios. It has been shown that the maximum displacement and maximum stress decrease up to a step-ratio of two for certain type of thickness variations presented in this paper. © 1994.
