Tracks for gantry cranes are commonly subject to eccentric and inclined loads in conjunction with very heavy vertical loads. Recent practice has been to support these tracks on granular support rather than reinforced piled foundation beams. The paper investigates the effect of a single strong layer of reinforcement placed within a well compacted granular soil on the bearing capacity at collapse of eccentrically loaded footings. The practical significance of the investigation in terms of heavy track guided systems is presented.
