Abstract
Several of the high speed optical fibre Metropolitan Area Networks proposed in recent years are slotted networks using deflection routing [1]. Manhattan Street Network is amongst the simplest of these with an underlying Manhattan graph. We propose to place highways in the Manhattan street network. This significantly reduces the delay in the case where packets have to travel long distances. With the reduced delay, the network can better support multiple services like packetised voice in addition to data communication. © 1991 SPIE. All rights reserved.
