Abstract
Single layer brazed CBN wheels have been very recently introduced. In this study, by A. Ghosh and A. K. Chattopadhyay, these were prepared by a precision brazing technique developed in-house. This chemical bonding technique made them advantageous over the electroplated CBN wheels in various aspects. The bond-strength of such a wheel was evaluated at the condition of both low and high specific load on grit. Interestingly, no grit pull-out could be traced in either of the cases. But, it was observed that grits were very much prone to breakage at the bond level at high load condition, leaving a part of its body firmly integrated in the encapsulation of the bond (braze-alloy). Such kind of premature failure, typical of a brazed wheel, seriously affects its grinding capability. This weakness of the recently introduced brazed CBN wheel is reported in this paper including an in-depth analysis on possible grit-failure patterns. Failure patterns of the affected CBN grits of the brazed wheel were also compared with that of an electroplated one. In addition, the possible factors behind the typical failure patterns of braze-bonded grits are addressed and possible solutions are also recommended for improvement of the performance of such unique brazed single layer wheel.
