Optical phase conjugation by degenerate four-wave mixing in samples of pristine and iodine-doped polyphenylacetylene at ruby laser wavelength (694.3 nm) is reported here. The nonresonant values of the third-order optical susceptibility χ(3) are determined from the measurements of reflectivity of phase conjugate signals.

The results of optical phase conjugation experiments in a degenerate four-wave mixing geometry are reported at 532 nm in a new block copolymer of phenylacetylene and norbornene. The copolymer sample with an equal number of repeating units for the two homopolymers prepared by sequential addition of the monomers gives a third-order susceptibility value which is twice that of the homopolymer of phenylacetylene. © 1995.

Degenerate four-wave mixing in the copolymer of phenylacetylene and norbornene

Conjugated polymers with sidegroups such as methyl, trimethylsilyl, p-methoxy phenyl, o-methoxy phenyl, and hexyl groups on a polyphenylacetylene chain are studied in an attempt to understand the contribution of factors such as the backbone, conformation of the chain, sidegroups and polymerization catalyst on the optical nonlinearities. The results of degenerate four-wave mixing experiments at 532 nm with nanosecond pulses indicate that the substitution of an electron-donating group away from the backbone can enhance the third-order susceptibility. Some of the polymers show optical limiting action at this wavelength. The thermal contribution to the measured susceptibility is also determined. © 1993 Chapman & Hall.

Optical nonlinearities in substituted conjugated polymers

The 60-atom carbon molecule C60 is investigated for its nonlinear optical characteristics by the technique of degenerate four-wave mixing at 532 nm. Very high phase conjugate reflectivities corresponding to a large third order susceptibility χ(3)≈10-18 m2V-2 and cubic hyperpolarizability γ≈10-41m5V-2 are obtained for C60 solutions in toluene. © 1992.

Metathetical Polymerization of Phenylacetylene with in Situ Generated (Arene)Mo(CO)3 Complexes under Thermal Conditions and Electron Transfer Chain Catalysis: A Comparative Study

Optical phase conjugation via degenerate four-wave mixing is studied in iodine solutions under pulsed laser radiation at two wavelengths (532nm and 694nm). The effect of using four different solvents (1,2-dibromoethane, xylene, methanol and ethanol) is studied at 532 nm. Phase conjugate reflectivities in the range of 0·1% to 0·3% are observed. The solutions exhibit a maximum reflectivity at an optimum concentration. The experimental data is analysed using the Caro–Gower model. © 1992 Taylor & Francis Ltd.
