Nonlinear wave propagation in Fanno line base flow

Abstract
The problem of nonlinear wave steepening in a Fanno line base flow is investigated. The quasi-one-dimensional continuity, momentum and energy equations for unsteady Fanno line flow are solved using wave front expansion technique. A closed form solution for the slope of particle velocity at the wave front is obtained in terms of the Mach number of base flow. This solution is used to develop a criterion for shock formation in Fanno line flow and to obtain the location of shock if it forms. The shock formation in subsonic and supersonic Fanno line base flow is analyzed.
