Past experimental investigations conducted on beam-to-column connections of steel MRFs show that welded connections designed in accordance with the classical Bernoulli Beam Theory (wherein flanges primarily carry bending and web the shear) sustained fractures of welds at the column face. The current practice of method of connection design as mentioned in the Indian Standard Handbook is insufficient for seismic applications. This paper presents experimental evidence of improved performance of welded connections designed by a new approach; these new connections can sustain large inelastic deformations and develop expected strength of beams without premature weld fracture.
