Abstract
The objective of this study is to develop an accident hazard index for uncontrolled intersections, so as to identify those intersections with serious safety problems with the backdrop of Chennai metropolis. The average number of fatal, grievous, simple and non-injury accidents over a three-year period was used as the base to model the Intersection Hazard Index. Single vehicle accidents and other categories of accidents like head-on, rear-end, side-swipe, right-angled collision and hitting fixed objects, spatial distribution of accidents over the intersection legs, and accidents by slow moving vehicles, were selected as the normalizing factors for the formulation and ranking through Intersection Hazard Index along with accident rate, accident cost and number of accidents.
