Fractographic features of the charpy impact tested weld metals of Ti6AI4V (ELI and commercial grades) made by autogenous welding of electron beam and gas tungsten arc welding processes have been studied and correlated with their impact toughness values. The instrumented impact testing was carried out on the as-welded and post weld heat treated specimens. GTA and two pass EB B-o-B weld metals showed less or no facets on the fractured surface compared to stringer bead EB weld metals. As-welded specimens of EBW (stringer bead) and samples water quenched from above (β)-transus temperature which showed lower CVN impact values showed intergranular fracture. Weld metals heat treated below (β)-transus which showed relatively better impact energy values exhibited transgranular type fracture. © Carl Hanser Verlag.
