Fine aluminum powder is widely used in making paints, printing inks, slurry explosives, pyrotechnic chemicals etc. Hence the production of aluminum powder is highly important. In this paper the effect of grinding aids on the grinding characteristics of aluminum in a vibration mill under an inert atmosphere of nitrogen has been investigated. It is found that the use of grinding aids is essential in grinding of atomized aluminum. Among four different grinding aids, stearic acid appears to be the best grinding aid. © 1983 Taylor & Francis Group, LLC.

Effects of grinding aids vibration milling of aluminum

Atomized aluminium powder is ground in the presence of stearic acid in a laboratory vibration mill at different conditions in order to study the effect of feed size, additive concentration, weight ratio of the feed to grinding media and ball filling on the grinding characteristics. Feed size is found to be an insignificant variable in the range studied. While a stearic acid concentration of about 3% is desirable, higher concentrations result in a reduction in the rate of grinding. A lower weight ratio assures a higher rate of grinding whereas higher ball filling is preferable considering the increased production of fines. © 1992, Society of Powder Technology Japan. Studies in vibration milling of aluminium powder

The effectiveness of seven grinding aids, namely triethanolamine, mono- and diethylene glycols, oleic acid, sodium oleate, sulphite waste liquor and dodecylbenzene sulphonic acid on the batch grinding of Portland cement clinker, limestone and quartz was investigated in a laboratory ball mill. The initial stages of grinding of the materials studied, without the use of grinding aids, were found to depend on their Moh's hardness. Excessive shell and ball coatings led to virtual stoppage of fine grinding of cement clinker and limestone. Quartz, which did not exhibit this property, continued to grind finer. All the grinding aids studied have been found to be effective in variable degrees. While the grinding aids had only a marginal effect on the grinding of quartz, they had a significantly beneficial effect on the grinding of limestone and cement clinker. Triethanolamine appeared to be the most effective of all the aids studied. In the grinding of cement clinker, gypsum also acted as a very effective grinding aid. The action of these additives has been attributed to their ability to prevent agglomeration and ball and mill coatings of the powder. © 1991.
