Three-dimensional computations have been carried out to investigate the effect of aspect ratio on wake characteristics of a prolate spheroid. Open source LBM solver (Palabos) has been used for the computations after obtaining necessary validations. Three different aspect ratios, namely, 1:2, 1:4 and 1:6 have been considered in present study for a fixed Reynolds number (Re) of 200. Wake remains unsteady for all aspect ratios at this Re. The coherent structures in the wake (vortices) have been identified using instantaneous plots of Q-surface, vorticity contours and line integral convolution. These results indicate transition of wake from steady three-dimensional to unsteady three-dimensional with the increase in aspect ratio. © 2020 American Institute of Physics Inc.. All rights reserved.
