Design and implementation of enhanced PID controller in embedded platform for realtime applications

Abstract
Most of the industrial processes are employed with conventional Proportional Integral Derivative Controller. To keep up with the raising trends of automation, digital controller technology is employed using a low cost microcontroller to control various processes as per user requirement. This paper proposes a standalone embedded PID controller with enhanced features using an Arduino which is capable to be used for any small scale processes replacing the need of a PLC The Arduino UNO is set up in such a way that it can support plug and play functionality. The designed controller has seven variants of control schemes namely P, PI, PI with Anti-reset windup, PID, PID with anti-reset windup, Process Variable - derivative (PV-d), PV-d with anti-reset windup controllers. The real time validation of proposed closed loop control schemes is demonstrated using a series RLC circuit and the results of all variants of controller reveal that the design can achieve proper and effective control. The advantages of this design include low power consumption, simple structure and convenient installation. © 2019 IEEE.
