Abstract
Bus transit is a major component of the public transport system in metropolitan cities and is the prime mode of mass transport in many urban areas in India. Nearly fifty-two per cent of all trips in Madras are carried by the city buses. In view of the rapid expansion of the city and the resource constraints for expansion of rail services, the bus transit will be called upon to shoulder a greater burden of the demand for public transport in the foreseeable future. Improvement of bus transit operation should therefore be an essential endeavour for the transport planner and the transport operator. The boarding time and the stopped time at bus stops have significant influence on the journey time and the productivity of the bus operation.
