Automatic Rule Generation for Supervision of Fermentation Processes

Significant benefits in yield and product quality can be obtained by automating the supervision of batch and semi-batch processes. A system for automated supervisory control of batch and fed-batch fermentation based on dividing the process into ‘phases’ and ‘transitions’ has been implemented. Supervisory control is based on the current active phase of the process. The current active phase is determined by detecting features in process data that accompany transitions. It is difficult to manually characterize a transition because of the large number of variables, operators and combinations involved. A method for determining the best conditions to describe the features corresponding to a transition is described. Results from application of this method to two separate runs of a fermentation process are presented and discussed.
