The present scenario of energy market is highly volatile due to large oscillation in the fossil fuel prices. During these periods, the high energy demand for the industries is being partially met through non-conventional energy sources such as wind and solar power. The large untapped energy potential in the Ocean is yet to be exploited due to many technological constraints. The recent decades have shown positive developments worldwide towards the ocean wave energy converters. In the present study, an improved wave energy potential estimate has been made. Based on various parameters such as physical site characteristics, environmental conditions and socio-economic regional state, the selection criteria have been suggested. This would form the basis for energy device selection for the decision makers. © 2016 Elsevier Ltd

The significant wave height and wind speed derived for the period 1993-2010 from altimeter data sets over the Arabian Sea, Bay of Bengal, and the Indian Ocean categorized as six zones has been analyzed. The average variation of both significant wave height and wind speed is found to be almost stable for the period of study. The study reveals that the average wind speed increases by about 6cm/sec/year during monsoon and post monsoon in the southern Indian Ocean. The distribution of wind and waves was studied in the context of seasonal variations. In addition, the average inter-annual and intra-annual variations along with the statistical parameters such as standard deviation, and root mean square wave height for the six zones are also reported in this paper. © 2013 Copyright Taylor and Francis Group, LLC.

Wind-Wave Characteristics and Climate Variability in the Indian Ocean Region Using Altimeter Data

In this paper, a detailed statistical analysis of the wind and wave fields in the Indian Ocean (IO) for the period of 1998-2009 was performed based on using the wind fields taken from the site of the National Centers for Environmental Prediction and the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NCEP/NOAA) [1] and on the numerical wind-wave model WAM [2] modified with the source function proposed in [3]. The primary analysis of the fields includes mapping the wind and wave fields, as well as their energy fields, calculated with different scales of space-time averaging; the subsequent zoning of the IO area; and assessing the seasonal interannual variability of all the fields and their 12-years trends. Further analysis is carried out taking into account the zoning. This analysis includes a construction of the time series obtained with different scales of space-time averaging for all the fields, a spectral analysis of these series, finding and analyzing the spatial and temporal distribution of extrema of the wind and wave fields (accounting for the their sharing in the zones), and making histograms of the wind and wave fields and calculating their first four statistical moments (in the zones and in the ocean as a whole). The results allow us to evaluate a large set of statistical characteristics of the wind and wave fields in the IO area, scales of their variability, their long-term trends, and the features of distribution for these statistical characteristics in the ocean area as well. © 2012 Pleiades Publishing, Ltd.

Joint analysis of the wind and wave-field variability in the Indian Ocean area for 1998-2009

Ocean wave energy is one of several renewable sources of energy found in the ocean. The energy in the oscillatory ocean waves can be used to drive a machinery that converts the energy to other forms. Depending on the type and their location with respect the coast and offshore, a number of devices have been and are being developed to extract the wave energy for conversion into electricity. The most common devices are referred to as the oscillating water column (OWC), hinged contour device, buoyant moored device, hinged flap and overtopping device. Particularly popular are OWCs and moored floating bodies. The idea of integrating breakwater and wave energy converters emerged in the Indian wave energy program. Graw (1996) discussed this idea and pointed out the advantage of shared costs between the breakwater and the wave energy device. Because long waves are usually experience stronger reflection at coasts and breakwaters, they provide good conditions for the operation wave energy devices which work efficiently when the reflection is high. There are examples that OWC devices have been installed in water as shallow as 3 m. This paper reviews the options of integrating OWCs with different kinds of breakwaters like the perforated or nonperforated caisson breakwater, and non-gravity piled and floating types. Conceptual design of OWC wave energy converters combined with breakwater structures

An assessment of the wave power potential along the Indian coastline has been made for different seasons. The locations off Bombay on the west coast and off Visakhapatnam on the east coast have the greatest wave power potentials. The occurrence of wave heights and periods are presented graphically. Monthly wave power variations for locations along the Indian coastline are also reported. © 1982.
