The constitutive relations for the flow of bulk solids through chutes developed by various researchers predict bulk density, velocity, stresses etc. But there is no universally accepted solution. An effort is made in this paper to develop a new model which can predict more details about velocity profile and stream thickness. This model is based on multilayer approach and the wall friction, the internal friction of the material and the velocity gradient across the stream thickness are taken into consideration. Experiments are conducted to validate the model. Empirical relations are developed from the experimental data. These relations can be used as a first approximation for the chute design. The values predicted are in good agreement with the experimental results.
