While there is a reasonable amount of literature available on the acoustical radiation characteristics of structures, studies relating to variable cross-sections seem to be limited. In this paper an attempt has been made to study the acoustical radiation characteristics of such structures by using a combination of finite element energy formulation along with the Rayleigh integral. The studies indicate the diverse nature of acoustical radiation characteristics of these structures especially the sound power and radiation efficiency. © 1993.
