India follows viscosity-based binder specifications. The shift from penetration grade to viscosity grade happened very recently and we give a brief overview of the same here. A large amount of binder data comprising 300 binder samples from twelve refineries and construction sites were collected by the research team from ITT Madras. All these binders were subjected to considerable testing to quantify their specification compliance as well as their rheological properties. Using such a rich database, a revised and more rational binder specification was released during 2012. This document outlines the approach followed towards that formulation.
